New Dawn Girls Club

The club targets the girl child between the ages of 9 to 18 in the 16 wards of Hwange
District. The purpose of the club is to help the girl child stand firm in patriarchal society like
the one we live in as well as to instill confidence and boost their self-esteem such that girls
find themselves in decision making positions such as parliament, cabinet, and village
gatherings, such that they aspire to be women of influence in the society we live in.
Over the years we have worked with more than four thousand eight hundred (4800) children.
Through our weekly sessions, the club addresses many challenges that adolescents face or go
through such as gender stereotypes, Child abuse, and hygiene etc. The discussions are crucial
in empowering children against harsh traditional practices that violate children’s rights e.g.
Child marriages, gender preference in education, the Journey of life which is a healing
process for our girls, empowering them to let go and make peace with their past. The Club
allows the girl child to discover herself and have ambitions. The club also offers a safe and
friendly environment for discussions and counselling if need be. It stands unbalanced to
empower only the girl child as the community comprises of both the boy and girl child,
effective to that cause Rose of Charity has incorporated the boys under the New Dawn Club
after a vast out-cry from the community.
